Martin Zillinger

Prof. Dr. Martin Zillinger is the founder and director of the Mediterranean Liminalities Research Lab together with Christoph Lange. He is the chair of the Department of Social and Cultural Anthropology and speaker of the Centre for Media Studies and the Study of the Contemporary as well as a principal investiagtor at Global South Studies Center at the University of Cologne .  He is also a PI at the CRC 1187 Media of Cooperation with a research project on Digital Publics and Social Transformation in the Maghreb. He is currently involved in a project on the Durkheim School and its impact on the social sciences. In the context of the Mauss-Werkstatt at the a.r.t.e.s. Research Lab he has been working on the translation and edition of the writings, which contributed to what we call Durkheims' and Mauss' Category Project. 

Martin Zillinger's research and teaching focusses on religion – in particular the anthropology of blessing – and media – in particular the ethnography and theory of situated media practice, ethnograpic collections and museum anthropology. Furthermore he is interested in migration and globalization as well as the history of anthropology. His regional focus are Europe, the Mediterranean, North- and subsaharan Africa.
